The magic of the feast of San Giovanni in Florence

A June 24 between history, picnics and fireworks

From the Middle Ages until today the date of 24 June has always been synonymous with great celebration for all of Florence and the florentines. The scheduled events are many and include historical re-enactments, such as the butt end of historic Florence football, and the inevitable spectacle of "fochi".

But let's order trying to recreate a small itinerary to enjoy the best holidays. The morning, on stage on the historic parade that will touch the Palazzo Vecchio, Piazza della Signoria and Piazza Duomo, with the Banner of Florence and banners, escorted by the valets and the men at arms.

At 5pm, in Piazza Santa Croce, will host the long-awaited final Calcio Storico Fiorentino (before the game, around 16, a procession starts from Piazza Santa Maria Novella, and along the streets of downtown ends right in Piazza Santa Croce). Finally, the highlight of the day falls around at 22.00. The chime of the clock reminds us that at that time it will be a special fireworks display, "the Fochi of St. John", which will paint a scene all its own in the sky above the city. But what is the "position" better to admire them? Advisable there to see up Ponte Santa Trinita, where perspective allows us to view a magnificent scenery that presents the Ponte Vecchio in the foreground, illuminated by fireworks behind he, and animated by the play of lights and shapes.

For lovers of natural style that never lose an opportunity to immerse themselves in the green, remember there that this year the cultural association Piazzart resurface the formula of the picnic night along the banks of the Arno. The prime location is the beach of the Lungarno Serristori in the San Niccolò, from where you can watch the fireworks in the shadow of the Tower. Reservations are recommended! Enjoy the "party" but, above all, enjoy Florence!
