Films shot in Tuscany take center stage at the 82nd Venice Film Festival
From Val d'Orcia to Florence, Tuscan locations become film sets
Tuscany is one of the stars of the 82nd Venice International Film Festival, which runs until September 6, 2025. Several films shot in the region or linked to Tuscan artists are featured in the main sections of the Festival, from the Official Competition to the Out of Competition screenings and the Giornate degli Autori (Authors' Days).
This occasion confirms once again that Tuscany is one of the most popular film locations, chosen every year by major directors and international productions.
Jay Kelly by Noah Baumbach: Clooney and Sandler between Arezzo, Montalcino, and Val d'Orcia
One of the most eagerly awaited films at the Festival is Jay Kelly, directed by Noah Baumbach and featuring an all-star cast: George Clooney, Adam Sandler, Laura Dern, and Alba Rohrwacher (born in Florence). Filming took place in May 2024 in some of Tuscany's most evocative locations: Montecatini Terme (railway station), Arezzo (Teatro Petrarca), Pienza and San Quirico d'Orcia, Montalcino (Tenuta Argiano) and Pitigliano. The film, which will be released on Netflix on December 5, 2025, tells the story of two middle-aged friends who, amid misunderstandings and comical situations, find themselves coming to terms with their lives during an eventful weekend.

Also Out of Competition – TV Series, Stefano Sollima's series Il Mostro (The Monster) debuts at the Lido, expected on Netflix on October 22, 2025. The series recounts the story of the Monster of Florence, one of Italy's most disturbing crime stories. Filming took place in Tuscany in November 2023, in Florence (Piazza San Firenze, the former Court of Appeal in Via San Gallo, and the Trespiano Cemetery), as well as Signa, Mercatale Val di Pesa, San Casciano in Val di Pesa, and Campi Bisenzio.

In the Out of Competition – Cinema and Music Special section, there will be a preview screening of Piero Pelù. Rumore dentro, a documentary directed by Florentine filmmaker Francesco Fei and supported by the Tuscany Region's 2023 Cinema and Audiovisual Competition. The film recounts the difficult journey of the Tuscan rocker after the acoustic accident that damaged his auditory nerve in October 2022. An intimate and personal reflection, it becomes a true road movie about art, resilience, and over forty years of an off-road career. Produced by Apnea Film, Nexo Studios, and DNA Audiovisivi, it will be in Italian cinemas only on November 10, 11, and 12, 2025.
Piero PelùOrfeo by Virgilio Villoresi: dreamlike and experimental cinema
Florentine director Virgilio Villoresi presents Orfeo, inspired by Dino Buzzati's graphic novel. The film combines handcrafted animation, optical techniques, and experimental cinema, with a cast that includes Luca Vergoni, Giulia Maenza, Aomi Muyock, and Vinicio Marchioni. It is a work that invites the viewer on a sensory and symbolic journey, conceived as a daydream.
Zvanì – Giovanni Pascoli's family novel at the Venice Days
Giuseppe Piccioni's Zvanì – Il romanzo famigliare di Giovanni Pascoli (Zvanì – The Family Novel of Giovanni Pascoli) will be presented at the Giornate degli Autori, in the Confronti section. The film, starring Federico Cesari as the poet, Benedetta Porcaroli as Mariù, and featuring Riccardo Scamarcio and Margherita Buy, recounts the intense and fragile life of the great Italian poet. Filming took place in the province of Lucca, particularly in Barga and Castelvecchio Pascoli, between October and November 2024. After Venice, the film will be released in cinemas on October 2, 2025, distributed by Academy Two, and will then be broadcast on Rai 1.
