Pilates in Florence: the best studios where you can practice it in the city

Discover the best studios offering classes (including personalized sessions) in reformer, matwork, and yoga

In recent years, Pilates has become one of the most popular fitness disciplines, especially among younger generations. Boosted by its success on social media and a growing focus on physical and mental wellbeing, this practice has come to embody a healthy lifestyle, helping to improve posture, muscle tone and reduce stress.

The origins of the method date back to the early 20th century and to its creator, Joseph Hubertus Pilates. Plagued by health issues as a child, he turned to disciplines such as yoga, martial arts and gymnastics, developing a system of exercises based on control and body awareness. During the First World War, he refined the method by using bed springs as resistance — an intuition that would later inspire the machines still used today. After moving to the United States with his wife Clara, Pilates spread his method — originally called Body Contrology — particularly among dancers and athletes, eventually turning it into a globally recognised discipline.

Concentration, control, fluidity, precision and breathing are the core principles of Pilates, which can be practised both on the mat (matwork) and with equipment such as the Reformer, Cadillac and Wunda Chair.

Whatever your approach, Florence today offers a dynamic and highly qualified Pilates scene. Here is a curated selection of some of the most interesting places to practise Pilates in the city.
