Stefano Ricci Explorer Symposium

Tuesday, 18 November at Palazzo Vecchio: a day of photography, storytelling and environmental sustainability for young people

Florence is preparing to become a laboratory of ideas and knowledge with the Stefano Ricci Explorer Symposium, the international event dedicated to young people and schools, scheduled for 18 November in the prestigious Salone dei Cinquecento at Palazzo Vecchio from 9 a.m. The symposium will focus on climate change, environmental sustainability, and dialogue between different cultures, explored through experiences of exploration, photography, and storytelling.

The initiative will feature world-renowned figures, including Alexander G. Moen, Chief Explorer Engagement Officer of the National Geographic Society; Milbry Polk, Executive Advisor of The Explorers Club; and Zahi Hawass, celebrated archaeologist and Secretary General of the Supreme Council of Egyptian Antiquities. Also speaking will be acclaimed photographers and award-winning storytellers such as Steve McCurry, a master of international photography; Andy Mann, specialised in nature and ocean conservation; and Massimo Sestini, a World Press Photo winner.

"It will be a valuable opportunity for younger generations, who will be able to listen to extraordinary guests and discover — or rediscover — their immense work in knowledge and outreach. It is to young people that we must pass the baton of our commitment, so that they may become the protagonists and architects of a future that is increasingly sustainable, environmentally conscious, and inclusive. I thank the Stefano Ricci Foundation for the quality and authority of this initiative, which brings to Florence some of the most important voices in the world of photography, storytelling, and environmental protection and awareness,” says Mayor Sara Funaro.

“I would like to thank Mayor Sara Funaro and the City of Florence for hosting this international gathering, which stems from my own experiences of travel and exploration, shared with my family, always carrying Florence in my heart,” adds Stefano Ricci, President of the Stefano Ricci Foundation.

Throughout the morning, students will have the opportunity to watch world-premiere video screenings, view iconic images, and engage with contributions from leading organisations committed to the protection of the environment and nature. The event, by invitation only, is aimed at high-school and university students, with the goal of encouraging reflection on highly relevant issues such as sustainability, climate change, environmental protection, and intercultural dialogue.

The Stefano Ricci Explorer Symposium thus stands as a unique opportunity for young people in Florence to engage with some of the most authoritative voices in photography, exploration, and scientific outreach, opening themselves to global perspectives on the challenges of our time.
