From April 22 to June 19, an exhibition not to be missed in Florence

April 22, 2016, the Strozzina Palazzo Strozzi in Florence hosts a major exhibition dedicated to one of the most important and original contemporary Chinese artists: Liu Xiaodong.

A wide selection of paintings, drawings and photographs taken by the artist specifically following a period of residence in Tuscany between autumn 2015 and spring 2016.

The main subjects of the works on display are the cities of Florence and Prato and Siena countryside, observed places and lived by through direct contact with the inhabitants and with a particular interest in local Chinese communities.

Born in Liaoning Province in 1963 and educated in Beijing, Liu Xiaodong is famous for a very personal painting style poised between painting of history and chronicle of the contemporary world.

Origin of the Palazzo Strozzi project is the particular artist's interest in the Chinese community in Prato, the most populous of Italy and one of the most important in Europe now reached almost to the third generation. Finally, in addition to other sites around Florence, where the Chinese population is more widespread, such as San Donnino and Osmannoro, the artist confronts the classic Tuscan landscape, from the hills of the Florentine and Sienese Chianti.

Inspired by these places has decided to create some landscape paintings representing Tuscany "dreamed" and "postcard" of the Val d'Orcia and the Crete Senesi. The exhibition at Palazzo Strozzi also becomes the occasion for a reflection on the migration of peoples and their relationship to new territories, and physical, geographical and cultural, in reference to recent events of the crisis at the borders of Europe, that the same Xiaodong he visited Bodrum in Turkey and Kos in Greece.
