Eleonora Riso, winner of MasterChef Italia 13

Our interview with the young Tuscan talent who triumphed in the cooking show

Eleonora Riso, winner of MasterChef Italy 13

The first thing you said when you were announced winner of MasterChef Italia 13 was “it doesn’t make sense”. Why?

I’d start by saying that at that point, I wasn’t thinking straight… from the start of the competition I really never thought I could win it; it was surreal. I came upon MasterChef almost by accident, it was like riding a wave, and sometimes truly unexpected things happen.

What are you taking away from that adventure?

A bit more confidence in myself, both in terms of my skills and my way of doing things. I’ve always been half-shy: a shy person that goes for it but still suffers from self-doubt. Maybe that’ll never change, but I know it can also be a strength.

Were there times when you thought you weren’t good enough for the show?

Honestly? All the time!

What was it like working front of house at Cibrèo?

Working as a waiter is great in itself, if it’s in the knowledge that serving others is a romantic gesture. But even more so at Cibrèo, because of the friendly atmosphere; it’s very homely and we were like one big family.

The place in Florence where you find inspiration?

Sant’Ambrogio market. It’s a real down-to-earth place where there’s constant communication and exchange; the stallholders love their work and their products.

What was the first thing you did when you were announced winner?

As soon as I got out of the recording studio I sang in the shower, then all of us - contestants and staff - went to the Chinese karaoke to celebrate and sing some more!

And what are you going to do now?

Have fun and enjoy this amazing moment!
