Monteriggioni di torri si corona

The suggestive medieval festival run Tuscany

It is one of the oldest medieval festivals in Tuscany, and attracts fans from all over Italy perhaps also for the incredible setting of its scenery, the fortified village of Monteriggioni, a few kilometers from Siena.

Before passing through the door of the castle you have to change the money: inside the walls the euro is not valid, in the taverns and at the market you pay only with the "grosso", the ancient currency of Siena. Once you pass the entrance you enter the past: ladies and knights, acrobats and jesters, taverns and craftsmen animate the streets of the village. It is the medieval festival of Monteriggioni, which takes place for two weekends in July and it tells "Delle Armi e degli Amori". During theese days Monteriggioni comes alive with shows in the square, tables with dishes of the kitchen of the past, workshops of ancient crafts, camps and chivalric tournaments.

Outside the walls military camps and tournaments are set up, inside a medieval village lives again. Three temporal spaces are reconstructed (the early Middle Ages, the communal era and the era of mercenary campaigns) where you can meet craftsmen at work but also knights, armed and infantrymen engaged in jousts and tournaments.
