The ground floor of a historic fourteenth-century building houses a rich collection of pieces of various periods and origin - paintings, sculptures and furniture -, from the Middle Ages to the 19th century. Worth the visit alone is the room hung with black velvet, where the 14th and 15th century paintings, the so-called “gold grounds”, are on view. In 2007, the Gallery’s contemporary section held an exhibition drawing a parallel between ancient and contemporary art titled “From Gold Grounds to Lucio Fontana”.
