Giardino dell'Iris

The garden is located east of Piazzale Michelangelo (p. 226) and is open only in May, during the international iris show/competition organized by the Iris Society. Historical emblem of Florence, the iris (or lily, as it is referred to in Florence) chosen by the Ghibellini, the faction which ruled the city until 1266, was white on a red background.

Florence did not change that symbol but inverted the colors, opting definitely for a red flower on a white background.
