A selection of the most interesting shows staged in Florence’s main theatres over the holiday season. Including the traditional Christmas concerts.
Showing at the Verdi Theatre, on Saturday, December 6, is Gulliver’s Travels, performed by the shadow theatre company Controluce.
On December 6, the Puccini Theatre presents Caveman, the world’s most famous one-man show revolving around the man-woman relationship, starring Maurizio Colombi and directed by Teo Teocoli.
From December 8 to 20, Zingaretti will be performing at the Pergola Theatre in The Pride, the brilliant play by Alexi Kaye Campbell, which explores the theme of love.
From December 8 to January 6, 2016, A Christmas "fairytale", at the Pergola. Shows for adults and children, but also fun and games.
From December 28 to January 3, at the Pergola Theatre, Emilio Solfrizzi will be starring in A Fitting Confusion, the hilarious comedy by Georges Feydeau, directed by Valerio Binasco.
At the Verdi Theatre, Massimo Ghini stars in the French comedy Une heure de tranquillité (December 29, 2015 - January 3, 2016).
From December 31 to January 4, at Teatro di Rifredi, The Gagfather: the Spanish company Yllana pays a tribute to the film noir genre and gangster movies, a highly humorous show full of outrageous situations.
On December 21, at the Verdi Theatre, the Spellbound Contemporary Ballet will be dancing to the music of the Carmina Burana.
From December 28 to 30, in Palazzo Vecchio’s Salone dei Cinquecento, Virgilio Sieni presents Divina Commedia Ballo 1265, to celebrate the 750th anniversary of Dante Alighieri’s birth: dancers and private citizens of all age going on a spiritual journey (admission free, upon reservation by calling 39 055 2280525).
On January 5, at the Verdi Theatre, Le Classique Moscow Ballet performs Swan Lake.
OPERA MUSIC AND CONCERTS
On December 5, the concert by the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino’s Female Chorus, in the Church of Santa Croce.
Staged at Opera di Firenze, from December 12 to 18, Rigoletto by Verdi, conducted by Zubin Mehta, in the new production by William Friedkin (the director of The Exorcist film), starring Ambrogio Maestri.
From 13 December to 1 January, the Toscana Gospel Festival, which celebrates 20 years (various locations).
On December 17, at the Verdi Theatre, the gospel concert by the Charleston Mass Choir.
Again on December 17, but at the Opera di Firenze, Zubin Mehta will conduct the Orchestra del Maggio Musicale Fiorentino for the Italian premiere of "Pulse", the latest work by the German composer Moritz Eggert (20.00).
At Opera di Firenze, on December 23, the Christmas Concert by the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino Orchestra, conducted by Vladimir Jurowsky (8 pm).
On December 24 (5 pm), at the Verdi Theatre, the Christmas Concert by the Regional Orchestra of Tuscany, conducted by Donato Renzetti (music by Bach, Respighi, Maxell, Davies, Dvorak).
On December 31, at Opera di Firenze, Valdimir Jurowsky conducts the New Year’s Eve concert.
From December 4 to 6, the Verdi Theatre will be hosting the Italian version of the most popular and beloved musical of all times, Jesus Christ Superstar, starring Ted Neeley, the famous American actor who played Jesus in the 1973 film directed by Norman Jewison.
At the Verdi Theatre, on December 12 and 13, the famous Compagnia della Rancia will be performing the musical based on the novel by Collodi, Pinocchio, and on January 6, Stage Entertainment presents The blues legend, the musical, directed by Chiara Noschese.
