Until October 9 appointment with floats and parades for an extraordinary edition of the famous carnival

The Viareggio Carnival 2021 is back. Five parades of floats on the Viali a Mare, the first took place Saturday, September 18, the next ones are scheduled for September 26, 2, 3 and 9 October. The appointment for this extraordinary version of the event is with the "Universal Carnival", dedicated to all the traditions, stories and cultures of Carnival in the world.

It is the first time, in almost 150 years, that the Masked Courses of the Carnival of Viareggio are scheduled between the end of summer and early autumn. A revolution of the calendar caused by the pandemic.

A unique and extraordinary edition for the city of Viareggio, wanted by the Carnival Foundation and the artists who have prepared their giant allegorical constructions also this year.

THE MASKED COURSES OF SEPTEMBER AND OCTOBER 2021

The parades of floats and masquerades opened on the promenade of Viareggio Saturday, September 18 with the first Masked Course.

The second Corso Mascherato on Sunday, September 26 will be an opportunity to celebrate an important anniversary for the Carnival of Viareggio: twenty years since the historic transfer of the floats from the old hangars in Via Marco Polo to the Citadel, which since that day in 2001 is the place of art and creativity.

Super Carnival weekend Saturday 2 and Sunday, October 3 with two exceptional parades of floats. Grand finale Saturday, October 9 with the fifth Corso Mascherato.

VIRTUAL CARNIVAL

A rich audiovisual program has accompanied the public in recent months to discover the art, history and traditions of the Carnival of Viareggio.

A journey behind the scenes of the event to tell the mastery of the builders, reveal some details of the floats under construction that will parade in September and October, pay homage to the most beautiful songs of the musical tradition of Viareggio and its authors, tell Burlamacco and its history, the one hundred years of the magazine "Viareggio in Maschera", present tutorials on paper mache and much more.

At the Cittadella del Carnevale, the new Espace Gilbert was inaugurated with some elements of the allegorical works of 2020, in an evocative and emotional exhibition that tells the world of fairy tales, Carnival's homage to great artists, the gigantism of allegorical constructions and the art of papier-mâché.

On the second floor of the museum space, the ribbon is cut for the new Historical Archive. Here is preserved the richest and most complete original documentation consisting of over 2,500 original sketches, precious historical documents of the event, the collection of official magazines, postcards and posters, all the main publications dedicated to the Carnival.
