Art, concerts, shows and good food. Here are the events not to be missed this month in and around Florence.

  • SUSSULTI METROPOLITANI, THEATRE, DANCE, MUSIC AND ACTIVITIES FOR CHILDREN IN THE FLORENTINE PLAIN

Celebrates its third edition Sussulti Metropolitani, the festival that from 4 August to 3 September 2022 will offer 13 days of events including theatre, dance and music with guests such as Federico Rampini, Lodo Guenzi, Ezio Mauro, Alessandro Paci, Chiara Francini and Andrea Bruni. More than 20 events are scheduled, starting on 4 August in Lastra a Signa in Piazza del Comune at 9 p.m. with Maledette canzoni d'amore.

  • DOMENICA METROPOLITANA

Sunday 7 August 2022 sees the return of Metropolitan Sunday, a day on which all residents of the Metropolitan City of Florence can enjoy the city's museums free of charge. Families with children will enjoy the activities in the Florentine palaces par excellence: Vita di corte at the Museo di Palazzo Vecchio and in Palazzo Medici Riccardi it will be possible to take part in a painting workshop inspired by the exhibition Oscar Ghiglia. The Twentieth Century Years. Young people and adults are offered visits to the Forte di Belvedere, where two major exhibitions will be on show. It will also be possible to visit the temporary exhibitions dedicated to Filippo De Pisis, Giulio Paolini and Luca Vitone and Corrado Cagli at the Museo Novecento, as well as the exhibition on Oscar Ghiglia at Palazzo Medici Riccardi. It will be possible to take part in the visits at Palazzo Vecchio, at the Complesso delle Murate and in the Brancacci Chapel in Santa Maria del Carmine, where it will be possible to access the scaffolding set up for diagnostic and restoration work. All guided tours and activities are free of charge and reservation is compulsory. Admission to the individual museums will be available while places last, except for the Brancacci Chapel, where reservations are compulsory.

  • HOMAGE TO WALT DISNEY BY THE FLORENTINE CHAMBER ORCHESTRA AT THE FONDAZIONE ZEFFIRELLI

"Beauty and the Beast", "The Little Mermaid", "Aladdin", "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs", "Mulan", "Frozen", "Sleeping Beauty", "Anastasia"... The most beloved cartoon soundtracks come to life in symphonic version on the occasion of the Tribute to Walt Disney by the Florentine Chamber Orchestra conducted by Giuseppe Lanzetta, Tuesday 2 and Wednesday 3 August 2022 (9 pm) in the courtyard of the Franco Zeffirelli Foundation, Piazza di S. Florence, Florence.

  • BALAGÀN CAFÉ: MEETINGS ON GUIDO FINK AND DAVID GROSSMAN IN THE GARDEN OF THE FLORENCE SYNAGOGUE

Sixth appointment, Thursday 4 August 2022, with the tenth edition of the Balagàn Café in the garden of the Synagogue (free entrance from Via Farini, 6 starting at 7 pm). The Balagan will enliven the Florentine summer evenings until 1 September. Also on Thursday 4 August, guided tours of the Synagogue and the Jewish Museum will take place, at a cost of €10 from 7.30 pm to 9 pm, held by dedicated operators; to participate, reservations are required at 055290383. Third and last evening of the "Balagàn Cinema in the open air" with the screening of "Grossman" the documentary by Ari Adbel, a film that creates an alternative biography based on the writings of David Grossman. The special Balacinema apericena curated by Michele Hagen and Jean Michael Carasso will be an experience of taste and culture inspired by the recipes of the Jewish world.   • EFFETTO VENEZIA

Effetto Venezia returns to Livorno from 3 to 7 August 2022, among the canals of the district of the same name. An event that for 37 years has offered a rich programme of initiatives. At nightfall, squares, streets and alleys come to life thanks to theatrical performances, music, street art, and artistic installations in the picturesque district dominated by the Old Fortress. Special shuttles are also operated for the occasion.

  • CALICI DI STELLE 2022

August is also the perfect month to raise one's glass to the stars, with the Tuscan Wine Tourism Movement's initiative Calici di stelle (Glasses of Stars), which for this 2022 takes place from 29 July to 15 August. Tastings, concerts and guided tours are just some of the initiatives organised in all the provinces by the historic wine cellars. Here is the complete programme.

August also promises to be full of shows and festivals not to be missed scattered throughout Tuscany. From Mont'Alfonso sotto le Stelle 2022 to the Summer Nights Festival in Follonica, here you will find a complete programme of national and international artists who will take to the stages of the many Tuscan festivals.

The Palio di Siena on 16 August is dedicated to Our Lady of the Assumption and sees 10 contrade compete against each other. There are three rivalries on the tuff of Piazza del Campo: Civetta-Leocorno, Nicchio-Valdimontone and Tartuca-Chiocciola. On the occasion of the Palio dell'Assunta, the floor of the Duomo of Siena is also uncovered, an extraordinary example of a marble commesso visible from 18 August to 18 October 2022.

  • BRAVIO DELLE BOTTI AT MONTEPULCIANO (SIENA)

One of the not-to-be-missed historical re-enactments in Tuscany is the Bravio delle Botti di Montepulciano, which starts again with a programme of events from 19 to 28 August 2022. Initiatives include the cellars in the piazza on Friday 19 August and the procession of candles on 25 August. The actual challenge on 28 August, preceded by the historical parade with over 300 participants.

  • CORTONANTIQUARIA

The first sixty years of Cortonantiquaria: the prestigious event integrating history, documents, art and craftsmanship opens on 20 August at the Sant'Agostino Convention Centre, with works from Italy and around the world, testifying to the multiplicity of tastes, schools, fashions and creative paths. Cortonantiquaria is flanked by the collateral exhibition "Un viaggio nel Futurismo: da Boccioni a Depero" (A Journey into Futurism: from Boccioni to Depero) curated by Simona Bartolena and coordinated by Daniela Porta of Leo Galleries (Monza). The exhibition is set up in the foyer of the historic Teatro Signorelli.

A form of popular and peasant theatre, typical of Tuscany, which is performed and sung by non-professional actors in Montelpulciano from 12 to 15 August 2022.

  • SAGRA DELLA PAPPARDELLA AL PARCO URBANO DI SONNINO

From 27 August to 5 September, the 42nd edition of the Sagra della Pappardella will be held in the splendid setting of Sonnino's Urban Park. The festival, which has the merit of being the first in Italy in the Pappardella speciality, will propose various specialities of local cuisine. Among the many, we would like to mention pappardelle con la lepre (pappardelle with hare), la lepre in dolceforte (hare in sweetbreads), and la lepre in salmì (jugged hare), as well as barbecued meat. The stands will be open every evening from 7 p.m. and on Sundays also for lunch. Here are all the other festivals not to be missed in Tuscany.
