Where to eat in the hills of Florence

Florence restaurants and trattorias where to enjoy an al fresco lunch or dinner

Fancy an unforgettable lunch or dinner overlooking Florence in the sign of excellence in beauty and flavor? We went scouting the most beautiful (and good) restaurants and trattorias above Florence-from Fiesole to Lastra a Signa-to bring you joys for the eyes and the palate.

Here, on the other hand, are the best out-of-town restaurants within an hour or so of Florence, while here are the must-visit restaurants if you prefer to travel to the coast.

Ristorante La Loggia - Belmond Villa San Michele
Via Doccia, 4 - Fiesole
ph. +39 055 5678200

At Villa San Michele, a former monastery in the hills of Fiesole and now a Belmond hotel, chef Alessandro Cozzolino offers an amazing culinary journey between past and present. During warm weather, remember to reserve a table in the 15th-century loggia with breathtaking views of the city for lunch or dinner al fresco without sacrificing taste.

Trattoria Omero
Via Pian dei Giullari, 47 - Firenze
ph. +39 055 220053

Trattoria Omero was founded in the late 1800s as a bakery and then, bought by Omero Attucci who, in '43, transformed it into a pizzeria to which he decided to add a few tables to serve hot dishes and his products. The historic Trattoria Omero is the ideal choice for anyone looking for an elegant yet rustic restaurant with a family atmosphere. Located in the winding Florentine hills, Omero offers a cozy ambiance in a dream setting while enjoying the delicacies of traditional Tuscan cuisine. Don't miss the Madame Bistecca.

Ristorante Lo Spaccio presso Fattoria di Maiano
Via Cave di Maiano, 2 - Fiesole
ph. +39 055 59432

Lo Spaccio Restaurant at Fattoria di Maiano is an agritourism restaurant, using only Tuscan products, many of which come directly from our garden. From meats to garden produce, from fruit varieties to delicious cheeses, from local cured meats to quality flours. All dishes are fresh and follow the progression of the seasons.

Diadema Restaurant - Relais Villa Olmo
Via Imprunetana per Tavarnuzze, 19 - Impruneta (FI)
ph. +39 055 231 1311

Moving towards Chianti we find the Diadema Restaurant, the heart and centrepiece of the Relais Villa Olmo all'Impruneta. The restaurant is born in respect of the territory, and Tuscan gastronomic culture becomes art. The cheeses, cold cuts, meats and wheat used to make the bread are chosen from the best of the local farms, and the vegetables are those from the resort's organic vegetable garden. Indispensable is the pairing of the dishes with the prestigious wines from the cellar, a combination in which passion, tradition, creativity and research come together, once again, to amaze and fascinate even the most demanding clientele.

The Lodge
Viale Giuseppe Poggi, 1 - Firenze
ph. +39 055 284874

In the green hillside of Piazzale Michelangelo, next to the fountains of the Ramps created by the famous architect Poggi, The Lodge is the Florentine address to experience to the full during the warm season. An international restaurant with a beautiful view of the historic center from the Poggi hill, entrusted to the hands of chef Rocco Loisi, creator of an eclectic cuisine with an international vocation, but without neglecting Italian gastronomic culture. Framing the gastronomic offerings of The Lodge Club is live entertainment, with cocktails and lounge bar, to welcome guests from afternoon to late evening.

Terrazza 45
Piazza Mino da Fiesole, 45 - Fiesole
ph. +39 055 597259

In a timeless Fiesole, where the panaroma over Florence mingles with the unordinary suggestions of an intact and genuine village. A young and sparkling panoramic restaurant with great insight in the kitchen. Try the appetizers of selected cured meats and cheeses, the fois gras with sauternes, first courses such as potato tortello over venison, and the larded pork tenderloin. A curated selection of labels is also not to be missed.

Antica Trattoria Sanesi
Via Arione 33, ang. via Dante Alighieri - Lastra a Signa (FI)
ph. +39 055 8720234

The trattoria was established in the late 19th century in an already rustic and domestic setting. In the early days, the Sanesi family ran a store selling a wide variety of foodstuffs and, above all, serving wine. Located in the historic center, an establishment with a simple and genuine tone with cuisine that offers traditional specialties such as ribollita, pappardelle al cinghiale and the inevitable grilled fiorentina steak.

Antica Trattoria Sanesi

Tullio a Montebeni
Via Ontignano, 48 - Fiesole (Fi)
ph. +39 055 697354

Old trattoria just outside Florence, after Settignano. Frequented by a loyal regular clientele who find here a friendly welcome and family warmth not easy to find. Simple cuisine with old-fashioned cooked dishes and especially spectacular steaks served by Paolo, Carlotta and Paola. In summer it is a real pleasure to dine al fresco at the few tables outside.

Tullio a Montebeni

La Sosta del Rossellino
Via del Rossellino, 2 - Settignano (FI)
ph. +39 055 697245

A true institution when it comes to wine, not just cuisine. Established in 1990, attached to the existing pizzicheria, overlooking magnificent Florence, untouchable dishes include tagliatelle al Sauternes or gnocchi col Castelmagno. A romantic and unique place, with a veranda overlooking the green or the night, an affectionate niche for lovers of the formidable food-wine-feeling trio. There is little to say about meat: they have always cooked Fassone, that is, Piedmontese breed, at La Sosta. From the "Fiorentina" to the fillet in a crust, arriving at the tartare, you can never go wrong. Great is the variety of cheeses, another passion of the house, as well as the Patè de Foie Gras prepared by Silvia.

La Sosta del Rossellino

La Casa del Prosciutto
Via Ponte a Vicchio, 1 - Vicchio (FI)
ph. +39 055 844031

In the heart of Mugello, in Ponte a Vicchio, La Casa del Prosciutto is practically an institution. There is no one who doesn't know this bridge house that combines grocery store, delicatessen and trattoria. You can stop in for a sandwich or a schiacciata and choose from a well-stocked counter of sliced meats, vegetables and cheeses to eat outside on the lawn or in the picnic area, get comfortable in the small indoor room with a fireplace or shelter from the sun under the trees at the outdoor tables. Specialties not to be missed include prosciutto - of course - but also bruschetta and crostini of all kinds and some extraordinary Mugello tortelli, as well as homemade meat and desserts. At the food counter then you can also buy local products, artisanal jams, cheeses and seasonal fruits.

L'Artusino
Piazza del Monumento, 9 - Cerbaia
ph. +39 3288816036 - 3396618788 - 3336594118

In the fund that used to house the Tenda Rossa, in Piazza del Monumento in Cerbaia Val di Pesa, Marco Gamannossi, Marco Tomberli and Clio Bianchi inaugurated L'Artusino, a name chosen by young patron Marco Gamannossi in honor of Pellegrino Artusi, the father of Tuscan (and other) cuisine. Straightforward flavors, patient cooking done unhurriedly, flavors that belong to the cuisine of our grandmothers, married to a short-chain wine list. The highlight? Obviously homemade pasta and the ever-present steak.

L'Artusino

La Loggia del Piazzale Michelangelo
Piazzale Michelangelo, 1 - Firenze
ph. +39 055 2342832

Since 1867, Ristorante la Loggia del Piazzale Michelangelo has been a landmark for those who wish to appreciate good food while admiring one of the city's most beautiful views. A concept that brings together art and elegance to entice the Florentine public to reacquaint themselves with its spaces.
